Softball leads to travel near and far

I've probably said this before, but where has the time gone? We've seen our seniors graduate, head off to beaches along the East Coast and safely return.

We are just a matter of a few weeks from the July 4th holiday, when summer, at least for me, seems to be at its peak.

I know I can speak for many that this is a busy stretch of time for parents and children alike who are involved in some sport or another. There are travel baseball, softball and lacrosse tournaments every weekend and it seems like they are almost everywhere.

Last weekend I was part of a contingent that ventured to the Columbia area for softball, while my wife was sent to Smyrna, Del., for more softball. Some Havre de Grace youth lacrosse players I saw in Aberdeen were headed to Westminster.

With all the travel though, it was a short drive up the road to Thomas Run Park that brought back the memories.

Before my wife and I even got to the walkway that leads to the softball and baseball playing fields, I run into David Hughes, a fixture on the field from the past days of the Susquehanna Semi-Pro Baseball League. Obviously in present days as well.

It was those days that seem way back when, that I spent many days, or should I say nights, on or around the baseball and softball diamonds. I played many slow pitch games in multiple leagues and covered a number of baseball games as well.

Those Crouse Construction versus Cecil Johnnies match-ups were history making in the process. These were intense, well played baseball games, that at times, became slightly physical contests as well.

I also spent some time around the softball fields where the fastpitch circuit was taking place. That's why we were headed to the fields Monday night.

Never in a million years would I have thought that my daughter Kelsey might be playing in the women's fastpitch league against some of the same women I watched those many years ago.

Her team, the Havre de Grace Chiefs, is full of other young ladies who have played together through the Havre de Grace Little League program, some former and current players of mine and others not.

The team has played three games to this point, but this was the first we could attend due to other obligations and duties.

The next couple of months on our schedule are extremely busy and I know that many of you can relate. Sad thing is, the kids will be jumping right back into school after these busy couple of months. I know a few, though, who will be excited as the senior year looms.

OK, stay cool, enjoy the current break in the heat and humidity and enjoy some outdoor activities.
