Commentary: It's clutch time for Harford's girls basketball squads

Over the next few days the UCBAC's girls basketball divisions will either be settled or tightened up like a drum.

Both divisions, the Chesapeake and Susquehanna, have head-to-head meetings between the top two in each division respectively, and it all gets under way Thursday.

Aberdeen, the leader of the Chesapeake standings at 9-0, will travel to Joppatowne, where the 8-1 Mariners will be waiting. Game time is 5:15 p.m., but if you don't have a pre-bought ticket purchased through the school, you won't see the game.

No tickets will be sold at the door.

For those who attend, I believe we will see another outstanding contest between two quality teams.

In the previous meeting played nearly a month ago, surprisingly Aberdeen walked away with a double-digit, 61-47 victory. I'm not sure anyone thought either team could win by that amount, but the Eagles took advantage of the Mariners foul trouble en route to the win.

Without a doubt, the foul trouble that forced Mariners point guard, TroiQuay Malloy, to the bench, was the major factor in the final outcome. I'm not saying the Eagles still don't win, but I'm pretty sure the score finishes a bit closer.

So, figuring both teams are at full strength and neither runs into injury or foul problems, the game should be close. That said, the Eagles are having a special season and despite being on the road in a bit of hostile, but friendly atmosphere, I think the Eagles find a way to win.

Good luck to both teams.

On Tuesday, yes Valentine's Day, it's the Susquehanna's turn to put on a show.

Unbeaten leader C. Milton Wright (10-0) will make the trip to Patterson Mill (9-1) for the rematch. In their last meeting, played January 19, the visiting Huskies raced out to a large first quarter lead of 15-3, but the Mustangs regrouped and found away to steal a 55-49 win.

Despite building such a large lead, the Huskies were playing without point guard Sam Herman, who is back in action as we speak.

Now, with Herman, the Huskies might have been able to do a few things differently in that loss, that may have allowed them to hold on down the stretch to record the win.

Figuring both teams will be at full strength come Tuesday, I think we'll see a different game. I can't see either taking a commanding lead like in the last contest. However, if the Huskies race out again, I can't see the Mustangs making it all the way back on the Patterson Mill floor.

If by chance the Mustangs jump way ahead, I don't see the Huskies making it back either, mainly because of their youthfulness.

Something tells me the Huskies are going to pull one out in this one and we will have a tie to deal with.

Good luck to both of these teams as well.

On the wrestling front the Patterson Mill team is making its first appearance in the regional dual meet championships. The Huskies have make the long trip to Parkside today (Wednesday). Good luck to the Huskies grapplers.
