Football: John Carroll gives up 56 points in first loss

John Carroll's bid to stay undefeated in varsity football was brought to an abrupt end Friday night at Arundel High School, where host Annapolis Area Christian School scored the first 35 points en route to a 56-18 bashing of the Patriots.

Annapolis running back Josh McPhearson ravaged the Patriots defense for 220 yards and five touchdowns on just 12 carries.

McPhearson scored the game's first points on a 13-yard run in the opening quarter. His other touchdown runs were on runs of 19, seven, 45 and 64 yards. All but one came in the first half.

In addition to McPhearson's scoring, Annapolis added two more first half scores through the air, covering 38 and 45 yards each.

John Carroll's first of three touchdowns came in the second quarter on a 10-yard passing touchdown from Brandon Lewis to Montell Martin.

The Eagles also scored on a 45-yard interception return in the third quarter to push the lead to 56-6.

John Carroll scored the game's final points in the fourth quarter. Austin Markley caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Lewis and Gus Lane added a one-yard touchdown run. Markley finished with 81 yards on three catches, while Lane led Patriot rushers with 110 yards on 16 carries.

John Galarraga led the defense with six tackles and Raphael Oduok had five tackles. Luke Navin recovered a fumble and Avery Callan had a sack.

The Patriots (2-1) will play on their own turf for the first time in 2011 on Friday night. The Patriots host St. Paul's (2-1) at 7 p.m.
