John Carroll ventured into Cecil County Friday night and came away with a fairly easy 35-6 win over host Bohemia Manor.
Kicker Alex Gambrell started the scoring with a 40-yard field goal before quarterback Brandon Lewis hit Montell Martin with a 36-yard touchdown pass down the middle of the field.
Gambrell added a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter and Martin ran 47 yards for his second touchdown of the half. The outside speed of Martin and Walt Rouche was complemented by bruising runs up the middle by fullback Gus Lane, whose 133 yards on 16 carries paced the Patriots 257-yard rushing attack.
Gambrell's two point after touchdown kicks gave the Patriots a 20-0 halftime lead.
Powerful offensive tackle Denzel Varner's pancake blocks, and strong performances by junior linemen Dan Kelble and Devin Ruann, led to huge holes in the Eagles defense.
Fullback Lane took advantage to open third quarter scoring with a 12-yard touchdown run and Lewis added a two-point conversion run for a 28-0 lead. Lewis then closed out the scoring with a one-yard keeper and Gambrell added his third extra point kick. The final score was set up by a Lewis to Austin Markley pass and catch that covered 34 yards.
Bo Manor avoided the shutout by scoring on a quarterback keeper on the last play of the game.
The Patriots' staunch defense was led by senior linebackers Jack Hinder and John Galarraga, with nine and eight tackles respectively. Defensive end Luke Navin added six tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery and linebacker Raphael Oduok made five tackles.
The Patriots will hit the road again this week, traveling west into Baltimore County to battle Dulaney, Saturday at 1 p.m.
