Outdoors: Unforgettable deer hunts? No such thing

I picked up a magazine the other day with an article entitled "Make this deer season unforgettable." Of course, as usual they were talking about how to get the biggest buck. The only problem I had with the article is that all deer seasons are unforgettable to me.

I have hunted deer in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Maryland and can tell you about every hunt. It made no difference if I scored on a buck or doe or maybe didn't even get a shot. It was still fun. I have taken deer with a bow, shotgun, rifle and muzzleloader, plus I have been skunked on many trips, bit it was still fun.

It is always nice to become one with nature. Many folks tell me they are because they take walks in the woods and this is great. The thing is, unless you take the time to stop and sit quietly, you miss much. The hunter will learn more about wild animals and their survival.

For me, it is a great pleasure to have a small bird, squirrel or other woods animal come near my stand. These pictures are embedded in my memory and are as treasured as the deer hunts.

Quiet is the key word but the woods are anything but. There is the wind, the sound of small animals in the leaves, footsteps of approaching deer, falling nuts dropped by squirrels and much more. The most important thing is that it is all natural and for me, is a time of peace.

Hunters, it is our job to introduce new people to the sport of hunting. Many youngsters and many women are now enjoying hunting. In fact, nationwide, women are buying more hunting licenses each year. Start building your unforgettable hunting trips.
