Can't spot a deer? Just check your yard

I am sure that by now many have taken deer. I am also getting reports of hunters not finding deer in their hot spots. Well I can tell you where they are.

Last Saturday, my grandkids and the kids next door were playing in our yard when they were nearly run over by a herd of deer. One of the deer, according to my Grandson, was a buck that chased him. No one was hurt, no animal was hurt, and me not there to get a shot.

So far this is turning out to be a normal deer season. Warm one day, cold and windy the next. On days of high winds and rain I have had little luck deer hunting. It seems the animals are smarter than me and stayed under cover.

Deer shotgun season runs until Saturday, Dec. 10, and will re-open again Jan. 6 and 7. Muzzleloader season opens Saturday, Dec. 17, and will run through Dec. 31. So even if you haven't scored as of yet, there is still plenty of time.

The biggest problem for local deer hunters is what type of clothing to wear. I am not speaking of camo, but of warm, rain-proof outer wear. I always like to carry a small duffel bag with extra clothing so I could change to match the weather.

The idea is to keep warm but not too warm. Thus we should dress in layers to maintain comfort. This way we can remove or add clothing as needed.

I am still not giving up on fishing. Many anglers have found that this is the time of the year when fishing is best.
