Muzzleloader season closing for hunters, archers have deer to themselves

Saturday is the end of the early muzzle-loading season for deer. The archers can have the deer hunting to themselves until regular firearms season opens on Saturday, Nov. 26. The season will be open on Sunday, Nov. 27 on private lands only. You still must have the land owner's written permission.

I am not in favor of Sunday hunting. I have been in jobs that required a six day work week but still found time to hunt. I saved some of my vacation days strictly for hunting. I used any holidays to hunt.

Some say, "but you fish on Sunday." There is a big difference, fishing is a quiet sport and does not disturb others. For many people Sunday is a day of peace and quiet, they spend in church and with family. The sound of firearms in nearby woods is to them a pest. I love hunting as much as anyone but let's give it a rest on Sundays.

I am sure there are many who will disagree with me but they have that right. I am also sure that Sunday hunting will grow to more than one a season. The only thing I ask is that we respect the rights of others.

I hope every one of you has a successful black powder hunt. The only thing I have heard is that many deer are small. This can be a sign of fawns being dropped late or that we have too many deer for the amount of food and cover. Whatever it is, the herds need to be thinned.

When firearms season opens, the limit is 10 doe and two bucks. You can only take the second buck after you take two doe and then you can get another buck stamp.

Have fun and be careful.
