It's not spring, but plenty of trout in local streams

This may sound like spring has returned but such is not the case. There has been a fall stocking of trout throughout the state. A mixture of rainbow, brown and the bright yellow hybrid trout have been distributed in our many trout streams.

This is a great time to fly fish with any buggy looking flies. I still prefer a wooly-bugger type fly in a variety of colors and sizes. Grasshopper and cricket imitations are also a good selection.

For those who prefer live bait, the same ones used earlier in the year are fine. Small silver or gold spinners will also work well. Remember you still need a fishing license and a trout stamp.

This can make for a great day as you can hunt part of the day and fish during the rest. I have often hunted squirrels early, fished the middle of the day and then hunted again in the evening.

As the leaves are starting to fall it makes it easier to see the squirrels but it also make it easier for them to see you. All movement should be slow and you need to check the area ahead before you move.

This is the perfect time to select a feeding area or den tree and sit. Clean the leaves and dead sticks away from the stand you choose to keep the noise down if you need to move for a shot.

Bow hunters are seeing many deer but still most reports are of smaller than usual deer. As the rut starts the bigger animals should moving.
