Outdoors: Family fishing is a great idea

Fishing is a family sport that can be shared with grandparents down to the smallest family member. Of course, those smaller people require more time and help than older folks. I like to show younger anglers just how to bait a hook. The addition of weight is explained and when to use a float.

The importance of catch and release is something that needs to be expressed. This was a lesson I had to learn on my own. The idea I had was to bring home as many fish as I could. Thus, we had more fish than we could use so I started supplying to neighbors. The big problem here was that they wanted them cleaned and table ready.

The fishing pressure is greater today as more anglers are enjoying this sport. The importance of catch and release is far greater. The last thing we want to do is wipe out the objects of our sport.

Once again I stress the importance of taking a young person fishing. Many families seem to be too busy trying to make ends meet than to take their children.

I heard of one family where the neighbor took a youth fishing and such a good time was had the youngster talked his dad into going. The bottom line was that two new fishermen were added to those who already enjoy the sport.

I get asked often, where can I take my youngsters to catch some fish? We are blessed with many different types of fishing holes. We have big waters such as the ocean and bay, and streams and small lakes or ponds. You can fish from a boat or there are many areas that you can bank fish.

Enjoy this summer more as a fishing family. The family that fishes together stays together.
