Last week, my wife asked me why my column was only about worms. Of course she doesn't fish so this would not be of interest to her. Years ago she tried fishing, but it's not her bag.
Today, however, the numbers of women who are hunting and fishing is growing. There have always been many women who enjoyed fishing. I was pleased to hear that ladies involved in fly fishing are on the rise.
Many young lady college students spend their summer vacations fishing out west. They take jobs in novelty shops to finance their stays. I asked one young lady how often she fished. Her answer was every free minute she can get. What about the bears, I ask her. Her reply "they have to catch their own fish."
I know many women who love to fish and, like youngsters, they enjoy all fish caught. We men watch all the fishing shows on TV and want to catch monster fish each time we go out. Using the proper size tackle, a 6-inch fish can feel like a monster.
When fishing streams or ponds this is why I like to use ultra-lite tackle. A small fish is fun but when you catch a bigger one the challenge of landing it is greatly increased.
A true angler is one who can catch sailfish one day and fish for crappie the next. Of course, they match the tackle to the size fish they seek. You can enjoy catching many more crappie than sails. Landing a big game fish is hard work.
It is about time to put away your hunting gear. I like to pack it in large plastic trash bags with some earth scent. Leaving it uncovered it will pick up many household odors. They can easily be picked up by the deer.
