Outdoors: The joy of feeding birds; try it, you might like it

One of my favorite pastimes is to watch the different types of birds at our feeder. We feed year-round but of course, we get more birds in winter. The variety of feeders is great and at times we get a bird that makes us get out the bird book.

We have two feeders, both near windows so we can watch. Of course, this drives our cat crazy as he watches the birds fly in to feed. The birds seem to know the cat gazing out the window can't get to them.

The small amount of snow has not made it harder for wild birds and animals to find natural food sources. It is only when we have heavy snows that finding food becomes a problem for them.

Other than helping wild birds the pleasure is in watching them. We have several that try to become the boss bird and make others wait until they eat. Not much different than people.

This hasn't got much to do with hunting or fishing. As we feed some, others get the benefits. Squirrels and other small animals feed on the seeds dropped by the birds. Of course, the hawk that sits on the phone lines at times is waiting for a chance at a careless bird.

If you are not feeding birds you should try it, it's really fun to watch them.

Do not forget the Izaak Walton League Gun Show at the Reckord Armory on Feb. 3, 4 and 5. This is one of the largest gun shows in our area.

Another reminder is the Turkey Shoot at Delta Peach Bottom Fish and Game Sunday. Signup for shoots will begin at 9 a.m.

If you have an outdoor notice, please contact me at least three weeks ahead of the event.
