With the crazy weather we have been having, I don't know if hunting or fishing should be my topic. Cottontail rabbit season is still in and runs through Feb. 29. Rabbit hunting will give you a good winter workout. It requires that you walk through heavy brush and briers. This is the home of rabbits and you need to chase them out.
Of course, if you own one or more good beagles you can let them get the rabbits up. This is a little slower hunting, since you will have to wait while the dog chases the rabbit. As all old rabbit hunters know, the rabbit will usually run in circles so stay put and with any luck you will get a shot.
Squirrel season is still in and it also runs through Feb. 29. The idea of finding a den tree is a good idea. Then sit quietly and wait for action. All the leaves are gone and any movement on your part will be easily spotted.
Archery season with bow and arrow is still in until Jan. 31. There is still a chance to take a nice deer before the season ends.
Hot fishing locally is still the streams, ponds and lakes. There are still trout in Deer Creek along with many other species of fish. The water will be cold so baits should be presented slowly also.
In ponds, big bluegills are still hitting worms and insects. The best bet is to present the baits near the bottom and slowly move after short pauses.
Crappie is the hot fish in Conowingo Lake. You will usually find them in schools near structure. Jigging a shad dart is a good choice of bait. Adding a small minnow will improve your chances of a strike.
