An Edgewood man was ordered held without bail on assault charges after his ex-girlfriend told a Harford County judge she fears for her life.
Around 5:22 a.m. Sunday, Harford County Sheriff's deputies were called to the 800 block of Windstream Way after neighbors heard screaming and crying coming from a nearby apartment, according to charging documents.
When police arrived, they heard the screaming and crying and knocked at the door. A woman answered the door and said her ex-boyfriend, Darrin Madison Brown, 21, allegedly beat her then ran away, according to charging documents.
A neighbor overheard and told deputies Brown was still in the residence, according to charging documents.
Police asked the woman to come outside then announced themselves and searched the apartment. Police learned there was a warrant for Brown's arrest and when they found him hiding behind a heating unit in a closet, they tried to take him into custody, according to charging documents.
Brown allegedly cursed at and struggled with deputies, hitting one deputy in the shins and another in the groin, according to charging documents.
Brown, of the 900 block of Topview Drive, was charged with three counts of second-degree assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
At Brown's bail review hearing in Harford County District Court Monday, Brown's ex-girlfriend and alleged assault victim, Amanda Crowther, addressed Judge Victor Butanis, begging him to keep Brown behind bars.
"I want to make sure he can't get out," Crowther said.
She explained that if any bail were imposed, his friends would pool their money and get him out. She said she was afraid of what would happen and if he was let out of jail.
"He will probably come after me," Crowther said, adding that if he attacks her she may not survive.
Crowther also told the judge Brown has a history of violating protection orders she had in place in the past.
Butanis ordered Brown held without bail at the Harford County Detention Center.
A preliminary hearing for the case is scheduled for July 18 in Harford County District Court.
