Edgewood man indicted in September killing

An Edgewood man was indicted on murder charges Sept. 20 after allegedly attacking his pregnant girlfriend then choking her mother's boyfriend to death earlier this month.

Gary Charles Clayton III, 25, of the 2400 block of Hanson Road, was indicted Sept. 20 on charges of first-degree murder and second-degree assault.

The charges stem from an altercation on Sept. 2 when Clayton and his girlfriend began to argue.

The argument allegedly turned physical and the young woman's mother's fiance, Jamal Leon Jenkins, 45, intervened.

Clayton allegedly put Jenkins in a chokehold and told him, "I'm going to [expletive] kill you," several times as he gripped the older man's throat and cut off his air supply, according to a Harford County prosecutor.

Around 3:30 a.m., Harford County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Jenkins' home in the 700 block of Stanford Court in Edgewood. They found him in distress and an ambulance from Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company took Jenkins to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Once in custody at the Harford County Detention Center, Clayton allegedly assaulted correctional officers.

Clayton remained held without bail at the detention center Thursday. No trial date had been set as of Thursday afternoon.
