Around 4 p.m., a Harford County sheriff's deputy conducting a speed reduction detail at Dublin and Hughes roads recorded a station wagon going 46 mph in a 30 mph zone, according to a release from the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy began a traffic stop and the silver Ford Focus station wagon pulled to the side of the road, but as the deputy walked toward the car, the driver allegedly pulled away from the shoulder, shook his head at the deputy then sped down the road, according to the release.

Deputies began searching the area for the driver, later identified as William D. Carter, 49, of the 100 block of New County Road in Aberdeen.

A short distance from the original traffic stop, deputies saw Carter running in the area, according to the release. Carter allegedly continued dodging police then ran into the woods, according to the release.

Patrol deputies on foot and in cars searched the 20-acre area near Route 1, Hughes Road and Arena Road and were joined in the search by sheriff's office police dogs and the Baltimore County Police Department's air unit.

After 90 minutes, police called off the search, deciding Carter did not pose a danger to the community at large and the nature of his possible charges did not require a large scale search.

Charges of fleeing and eluding police are pending against Carter. He had no open warrants for his arrest at the time of the stop, according to Monica Worrell, public information specialist with the sheriff's office.

The station wagon was towed from the shoulder of Hughes Road.
