Edgewood man held without bail on first-degree assault charges

An Edgewood man is being held without bail after allegedly holding a knife to his father's throat.

Jason Edward Spence, 30, of the 2000 block of Hanson Road, appeared before District Court Judge Victor Butanis Wednesday afternoon in a bail review hearing. Spence is charged with two counts each of first- and second-degree assault, having a dangerous weapon with intent to injure, false imprisonment and four counts of violating a protective order.

Public Defender Lynne McChrystal represented Spence Wednesday and requested that his bail be reduced from $500,000. McChrystal pointed out that Spence has three children and has lived his entire life in Harford County. She said he suffers from depression and anxiety.

Spence spoke briefly, saying that he had no criminal background and "made a mistake."

Assistant State's Attorney Kemba Lydia discussed some of the charges in the case, saying that Spence's parents filed a protective order against him which he allegedly violated when he went to their house and allegedly held a knife to his father's throat.

Lydia also pointed out that Spence could not return to the address he listed because it is his residence with his parents. She requested he continue to be held at his current bond, $500,000, but Butanis opted to hold him without bond.

Spence is being held at the Harford County Detention Center.
