A Joppatowne home was extensively damaged by a fire Wednesday afternoon that investigators believe started in a boat parked next to the dwelling.
Several fire companies responded to the initial call for a boat on fire in the 700 block of Shore Drive that was first received by Harford County's 9-1-1 Center around 2 p.m. Succeeding calls said there was a dwelling fire with rescue involved, according to monitored emergency radio broadcasts.
The fire gutted one side of the split-level home closest to where the boat on a trailer was parked. Two occupants of the home, a man and a women, got out without any injuries, firefighters on the scene said.
Responding companies included Joppa-Magnolia and Abingdon volunteer fire companies and Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department in Harford County and the White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A deputy state fire marshal was at the scene.
