Accident leads to power outages

More than 700 Harford County BGE customers were without power after a man crashed his van into several utility poles and a tree in Joppa Tuesday evening.

Jon Michael Bigos, 35, of Baltimore, was driving a work van south on Joppa Farm Road, according to Capt. Keith Warner with the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

In the 800 block of Joppa Farm Road, the van swerved off the road, hit a no parking sign, light pole, telephone pole and a tree in someone's front yard, Warner said.

The van came to a stop about five feet shy of the property owner's front door, he said.

Bigos was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air for treatment of minor injuries and, because police believed he was under the influence of alcohol, he was offered a blood test, which he refused, Warner said.

Charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving while impaired by alcohol were pending against Bigos Wednesday, according to Warner.

Because a power police was involved in the accident, 747 BGE customers in the Joppa area lost power, according to Linda Foy, spokeswoman for BGE. Foy said all customers had power restored by 10 p.m. Tuesday.
