As hunting season starts, shots fired reports abound in northern Harford

The hunting season may be connected with what little crime there is in the Jarrettsville and Norrisville areas, where residents often report hearing shots fired.

"It wouldn't be uncommon to hear a shot," David Seman, chairman of the Jarrettsville/Norrisville Community Council, said at Wednesday's meeting.

Capt. Keith Warner, of the Harford County Sheriff's Office, said there have been a lot of calls from people concerned about hearing gunshots.

He said the sheriff's office generally directs those calls to the Department of Natural Resources.

He also said crime in the area has "pretty much stabilized," although there have been a few burglaries. Those are mostly from sheds and involve the theft of items like weed trimmers and chain saws, Warner said, noting they are crimes of opportunity.

Residents also mentioned truck traffic as an ongoing concern, and County Councilman Chad Shrodes, who was in the audience, said he was hoping to continue addressing it.

Shrodes said he wants to try to compare the truck volume between the Norrisville area and Dublin/Darlington area and find out where the trucks are going.

"It's such a hard thing to control," he admitted.

Also at the meeting, council member Bill Nicodemus said the county's parks and recreation department is seeking a firm to evaluate the restroom/storage building at the Jarrettsville Elementary School complex, after which the department will decide whether to renovate the building or construct a new one.

The county is also developing preliminary plans for additional parking at the Norrisville park and library. Construction is not expected to happen until 2014.
