Havre de Grace native and golf professional David Hutsell completed his first round in the 93rd PGA Championship Thursday with a six-over-par round of 76 at Atlanta Athletic Club in Georgia.
Hutsell, who now makes his home in Lutherville, made a pair birdies on holes six and 13, both par fours, but also carded six bogeys and one double bogey.
"Just made a few bad swings today," Hutsell said by phone Thursday afternoon, in between some practice time. "I was in the water three times on the back, on both par threes and on 18."
The double bogey came on the par three 15th, a 260-yard hole. Hutsell's tee shot was right into the water and he scored a five. The other par three, the 207-yard 17th hole, also saw Hutsell's tee shot find water as his miss hit left the ball short of the green.
"I wasn't perfectly sharp today," said Hutsell, whose 76 was equal to tour veteran Vijay Singh and one stroke better than veterans Tiger Woods and John Daly.
Figuring the cut line might be plus 1 or even plus 2 after Friday's second round, Hutsell knows what he has to do; shoot 65 or 66 on the par 70 course.
"It's possible, make some putts, better short game, keep the ball in the fairways," Hutsell said.
Hutsell will begin his second round Friday at 1:30 p.m., going off on the 10th tee.
