Harford's first snow of the season already a distant memory

Any traces of Harford's first significant winter weather Saturday had all but disappeared by the early part of this week, when temperatures jumped from the low-30s to the low-50s.

Saturday morning's precipitation left a thin layer of snow covered streets, driveways and trees. And despite thick, heavy fog on Monday and into Tuesday morning, the skies had cleared and the sun shined brightly later in the afternoon, leaving the snow and ice a distant memory.

Harford County Public Schools, already scheduled to be closed Monday and Tuesday for students because of teacher and staff development, opened on time Monday for teachers and staff.

Sunday night's anticipated freezing rain made little impact on the county, with a freezing rain advisory ending at 11 a.m. Monday.

Major state and county roads in Harford experienced no reported problems during the Monday morning commute; however, the county was part of a fog advisory earlier in the morning.

The county had equipment out Monday morning removing the last remnants of show and slush from secondary roads.

Harford County activities were canceled Saturday because of snowfall throughout the night, but no major incidents were reported related to the light snow followed freezing rain and rain Saturday morning.

In an email early Saturday morning, school system Manager of Communications Teri Kranefeld said all activities scheduled in school buildings had been canceled because of the inclement weather.

The school system also canceled all activities for Sunday.

Harford County government spokesman Ben Lloyd also reported that all of the county parks and recreation facilities would be closed Saturday as well.

Otherwise, Harford saw little impact from the season's first snowfall.

Emergency routes throughout the county were cleared down to pavement by noon Saturday, according to Harford Emergency Operations Center Deputy Manager Richard Ayers, who said he had received information from the State Highway Administration. The only concern, he said, was about possible refreezing overnight.
