Late superintendent to be honored at Harford board of education meeting

A former superintendent, who died in 2008, will be inducted posthumously into the Harford County Public Schools Educator Hall of Fame at the Sept. 26 board of education meeting.

Dr. Jacqueline Haas was the Harford County superintendent from March 1998 through December 2008 when she died suddenly from a severe asthma attack. Dr. Haas, 59 at the time, had suffered with asthma for years but had never missed work because of the illness, according to an article in The Aegis.

Dr. Haas was named interim superintendent of Harford County Public Schools in March 1998 and appointed to the position five months later. She started in Harford schools teaching special education, as a long-substitute teacher in 1979, and had also been an elementary school teacher, assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent.

In her career, Dr. Haas earned many honors including Maryland Superintendent of the Year for 2008.

On Monday, Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the A. A. Roberty Building, the board of education will induct Dr. Haas into the Hall of Fame.
