After some inclement weather delayed the start of its regular season, the C. Milton Wright girls soccer squad finally got things started Tuesday, and did so in style, beating the Institute of Notre Dame squad, 5-1, in Baltimore.
The game's first goal came 25 minutes in, when CMW's Sarah Piazza knocked a shot into the host team's net on a cross from Megan Frailer.
Abbey Smucker put the Mustangs up 2-0 a few minutes later, putting away a goal with an assist by Catherine Kim.
Frailer scored CMW's third goal with the help of a through pass from Angela Kuhn.
With less than a minute remaining before the half-time whistle, Notre Dame scored its only goal, putting the score at 3-1 heading into the break.
Frailer was back at it again in the second half, scoring her second goal of the contest off Brooke Pridgeon's assist.
Kathy Kammerer wrapped up scoring for the day, putting a ball away with a helper from Mackenzie Cunningham.
Stacy Venzanzi had six saves in goal for the Mustangs.
CMW continues its tough early-season schedule on Friday with a 4 p.m. home contest against Maryvale.
Eagles shut down Warriors
The Aberdeen girls won their Tuesday girls soccer showdown with Havre de Grace, shutting down the visiting Warriors, 7-0.
Jasmyn McLeod paced the winning side with a hat trick, while Morgan Tildon had a pair of tallies. Leah Hardin had one goal and one assist in the victory, while Faith Edmonson scored once for Aberdeen. Hunter Woods led Aberdeen with two assists, while Rebecca Lewis, Samara Miller, Liz Fitch and Vanessa Hale all had one assist.
The half-time score was 6-0.
Patriots tame Huskies, take 4-1 win
Playing for the first time in more than a week on a field softened and muddied by recent heavy rains, the John Carroll Patriots earned their second win of the season Monday night, picking off the visiting Patterson Mill's girls soccer team, 4-1.
The hosts struck first in the opening half, with Leah Pace blasting a shot into the Huskies' goal following a well-played ball from Meredith Haggerty.
Later in the first half, John Carroll freshman Caroline Sdanowich scored the first goal of her varsity career to give the Patriots a 2-0 cushion. Olivia DiFonso was credited with the assist.
John Carroll went up 3-0 early in the second half, when Nicole Wojcik blasted a shot off a feed from Pace.
Following Patterson Mill's lone tally of the game, Jordan Clarke wrapped up scoring for the afternoon, knocking in a shot from 15 yards out.
Patterson Mill goalie Erin Angelini had eight saves, while Susan Cumpston had three saves tending to the Patriots' net.
