JOHN CARROLL ties Mercy
The John Carroll Patriots (4-0-1) battled to a 1-1 tie with host-team Mercy on UMBC's turf field Wednesday night..
The contest ended tied after regulation and two sudden death overtime periods.
Late in the first half, following a loose ball near midfield, the Patriots' Leah Pace took possession and darted toward the Mercy penalty box, shedding several defenders before blasting a shot past the opposing keeper to put John Carroll up, 1-0.
"The teams played fairly evenly for the remainder of the half," John Carroll head coach Gary Lynch said. "However, with the combination of Mercy's stepping up and showing why they are a nationally ranked team, along with us showing how much energy we used in the first half, combined with some inexperience at the varsity level from some of our replacement players, Mercy took and held control for the first 15 minutes of the second half. This left us relying on great play and leadership from Gina Maiorana, who was back for only her second match after knee surgery, and Erica Bodt and Shelby Foit on the pitch. Once we got our second wind, it became a see-saw match again."
Mercy tied the game early in the second half.
Maiorana picked up five saves in goal.
