Girls basketball: Aberdeen sweeps Baltimore's best; North Harford's Heaps joins 1,000-point elite

The past week was a good one for girls basketball in Harford County, in team and individual play. Aberdeen flexed its power and talent to dispatch two of Baltimore City's best teams, while North Harford senior Sarah Heaps joined the 1,000 point club.

Eagles roll

For the second day in a row, the Aberdeen girls basketball team beat one of Baltimore City's best teams Saturday, defeating Dunbar, 60-48, in a Basketball Academy contest at Lake Clifton High School.

Saturday's win came a day after the Eagles, the Baltimore area's top ranked team, easily defeated the area's second ranked team, Digital Harbor. Aberdeen won in a rout, 67-38.

In Saturday's win the Eagles, now 16-0, got a double-double from both Bri Jones and TK Fowlkes. Jones scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Fowlkes added 11 points and 13 boards.

Jones also had eight blocks, and Nia Alleyne contributed nine points.

In Friday's win the Eagles survived a scare when Jones was knocked to the floor late in the first half. Jones, the Eagles 6-3 junior center, left and didn't return until later in the third quarter. By then, her teammates had taken care of business, pushing a 22-17 lead to 31-17.

The Eagles scored six more, all by Jones, who scored 10 straight points upon returning to the floor.

A 19-8 run by the Eagles in the fourth quarter boosted the lead to 60-30, the final three coming on Lakeia Hayden's three-pointer.

Despite missing nearly a quarter, Jones led all scorers with 22 points. She also had 14 rebounds and four blocks.
