The Aberdeen girls basketball team grabbed control of the top spot in the UCBAC's Chesapeake Division Thursday night, pulling away late to beat visiting Joppatowne, 61-47.
The Eagles (4-0 league, 11-0 overall) outscored the Mariners (4-1, 10-2) 37-23 in the second half, when junior center Brionna Jones scored 12 of her game-high 23 points. Jones completed the double-double with 19 rebounds.
Neither team led by more than six points through three full quarters, but Aberdeen used five points from Jones to open a 10-point lead (44-34) early in the fourth.
Joppatowne led 14-11 after one quarter, but the game was tied at 24 at the half.
Mariners point guard TroiQuay Malloy ran into foul trouble early and picked up her fourth foul just 23 seconds into the second half. The Mariners struggled to find consistent offense without her. Malloy fouled out with 32 seconds left and without scoring on the night.
Lakiah Huff, who took over much of the ball handling duties, led Joppatowne with 17 points and seven rebounds. Shakara Head, who never seemed to get comfortable in the paint, still managed 16 points and five rebounds.
TK Fowlkes also had a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards for the Eagles and Lakeia Hayden finished with 11. The Eagles, who were one for six from the free throw line in the first half, went 11-for-15 in the second half, including a perfect six for six down the stretch.
"I'm really pleased with the way the girls played, we just got caught up in foul trouble," Joppatowne coach Mike Harris said. "When your quarterback is on the bench for over two quarters, it's rough."
Mustangs beat Eagles
C. Milton Wright stayed perfect in Susquehanna action Thursday, winning big at Bo Manor, 77-17. The Mustangs led 43-3 at the half.
Allie Appleby led the Mustangs (5-0, 12-4) with 12 points and Savannah Humpreys added 10 points and six rebounds. Alexis Cuffe and Colleen Houck each added five rebounds to the win.
Huskies beat Indians
Patterson Mill (5-0, 7-4) kept pace with CMW atop the Susquehanna standings with a 59-16 win at North East Thursday evening.
Morgan Golec's 15 points paced three Huskies in double figures, with Sam Herman and Qalea Ismail adding 11 points each.
Cougars beat Hawks
In the Chesapeake division, Fallston kept pace with Aberdeen after a 48-39 win at North Harford Thursday night.
Rachael Holehouse scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Cougars (4-0, 7-3), while Alyssa March scored 15.
Sarah Heaps scored 12 points to pace the Hawks (1-3, 8-5), while Kristen Eyler had 10 points.
Fallston led at the half 19-15.
Bobcats beat Cobras
Bel Air snapped a 10-game losing skid Thursday night, beating host Harford Tech, 51-40, in Chesapeake play. Jasmine Mutunga and Kim Harrell scored nine points each to pace the Bobcats (1-4, 2-10).
Tech's Britany Chavis led all scorers with 15 points and completed the double-double with 18 rebounds. Emily Edmunds added eight points and Crystal McCullum had 13 rebounds for the Cobras (0-3, 3-6).
Bel Air led at the half, 27-15.
Rams beat Warriors
Edgewood put four players in double figures Thursday night en route to a 56-30 Susquehanna win at Havre de Grace. Jada Hatcher led the Rams (3-2, 5-8) with 19 points, while Shania Stamper, Tatiyana Stamper and Kia Robinson each scored 10 points.
No stats were available from Havre de Grace (1-3, 1-9).
HCS beats Indians
Harford Christian picked up a non-league win Friday night, beating visiting North East, 33-28. Cady Farrish scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Eagles. Grace Shanahan and Leah Edwards scored six points apiece and Amber Guertler had a team-best nine rebounds.
