Girls basketball: John Carroll, Patterson Mill take tourney titles

Wilmington, Del. - The John Carroll girls nailed down a tournament title Friday night, defeating the host-team St. Elizabeth's Vikings, 53-40, in the championship contest of the 21st annual Diamond State Classic.

Using what Patriots' head coach Mike Blizzard called "relentless defense," the Patriots limited the Vikings to nine field goals through the entire contest. After squandering a 10-point, third-quarter lead, the Patriots wrapped things up with a 19-5 run.

Emily Soller, who was named tournament MVP after the Patriot victory, led her team with 21 points, 15 of which came from beyond the three-point arch, while teammate Yemaya Johnson scored nine of her 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Vern Brown tournament

Many of Harford's girls basketball teams - Patterson Mill, Edgewood, Havre de Grace, Joppatowne, Bel Air and host Fallston – played in the Vern Brown Memorial Tournament at Fallston High School Thursday, when the Patterson Mill Huskies rose to the occasion and knocked off the Perry Hall Gators, 53-43, to bring home the title.

Leading the way for the Huskies was Morgan Golec, who netted 16 points, while teammate Sam Herman put up eight tallies. Following the championship game, both Golec and Herman were named as All-Tournament selections.

Carlee Lund and Qalea Ismail both put up eight points in the victory.

Rams run over Warriors

The Edgewood Rams rebounded from an opening-round loss to beat Havre de Grace, 64-22, in the White Division consolation matchup of the tournament.

At halftime, the Rams led, 29-8.

Shania Stamper scored 14 points to lead the Rams, while Jada Hatcher netted 12 points in the victory and teammate Tymira Stamper posted 10 points.

Katie Bubb and Samara White each scored a team-best 10 points for Havre de Grace.

Mariners suffer overtime loss

The Joppatowne girls took South River to the limit Thursday night in the tournament's Orange Division championship matchup, but came up short, losing 75-73 in double overtime.

Shakara Head led all scorers with 36 points, while TroiQuay Malloy had 15 points in the loss. Lakiah Huff had 15 points for Joppatowne.

After two quarters of play, the Mariners were behind 35-32.

Cougars take consolation contest

Host-team Fallston picked up a victory at its own event Thursday, beating Bel Air, 48-30, in the Orange Division consolation final.

Leading the way for the Cougars was Alyssa March, who posted 17 points. Rachael Holehouse dropped 12 points in the victory.
