Camera planned for Gateway Drive

A new camera is planned for the intersection of Gateway Drive and Boulton Street in Bel Air.

A few years ago, a traffic light was suggested by English Country Manor condominium residents to lessen congestion at that intersection.

At the time, in 2009, the town did not have the budget to support the project, as was the case in 2010 and still is.

Director of Public Works Randolph Robertson wrote in an e-mail that long-term plans include a four-way signal at that intersection, but the timeline for that particular project is "not determined yet."

The town recently received an easement from Harford Mall, allowing them to use a corner of the property to install the signal when that project begins.

For now, the town plans to move forward with a $5,000 to $7,000 project to install detector cameras, he wrote.

"That is the estimated cost of the contractor installing and connecting the camera," Robertson wrote, adding that public works employees would probably install the pole and underground conduit.

The detector camera would "monitor the number of cars waiting to exit from Gateway Drive onto Boulton Street." In doing this, Robertson hopes it will lessen traffic.

If vehicles are backed up on Gateway Drive, he explained, the camera would activate the red light signal at Boulton Street and the entrance to Harford Mall, creating a gap in traffic.

The camera is expected to be installed in the next two to four months, he wrote.
