Gas leak closes some buildings at Harford Community College

A natural gas leak at the Susquehanna Center construction site at Harford Community College this morning closed several buildings for about two hours, college spokeswoman Nancy Dysard said.

The Susquehanna Center, Chesapeake Center, Hays-Heighe House and surrounding parking lots were evacuated after a leak was reported at about 8:15 a.m., Dysard said.

The college stayed open and classes in other buildings were operating as normal, Dysard said.

The Susquehanna Center, Chesapeake Center and Hays-Heighe House were closed until 10:45 a.m.

The leak was caused by a backhoe hitting what was believed to be an abandoned gas line. The leak was capped and all buildings re-opened, Dysard said.

Classes were not interrupted and no injuries were reported, she said.
