Field hockey: Fallston beats Patterson Mill in OT thriller

Fallston, with the score of Thursday's Chesapeake (upper) Division field hockey duel tied at 2 and nine seconds left in the second sudden-death overtime period, beat Patterson Mill when Jenna Mosketti fired a shot into the Patterson Mill goal. The 3-2 victory pushed the Cougars closer to their fifth UCBAC championship title.

The victory was sweet for the Cougars, who lost last year's Chesapeake race to Patterson Mill by one game, finishing their 2010 divisional schedule with a 4-2 record, while the Huskies wrapped up at 4-1-1 to grab the top spot. Both Patterson Mill and Fallston won regional championships in the Maryland state tournament. Patterson lost in the Class 1A state championship game. Fallston's three-year state title run ended with a 2-1 loss to eventual state champion Glenelg in the Class 2A state semifinals.

Emily Keesling scored both of Patterson Mill's goals in the first half. One was unassisted and the other came off of an assist from Mariel Castronova.

Nicole McDiarmid, with an assist from her sister, Danielle, scored for Fallston before half time.

In the second half, the McDiarmids were at it again, with Nicole scoring the game-tying goal off of an assist from Danielle.

The game moved to overtime after regulation time expired with the score knotted at 2. One sudden-death period passed without a goal, and the second overtime was nine seconds from wrapping up when Mosketti put away the game-winner. Had Mosketti not scored, the game would have moved into penalty strokes play.
