Chestertown – The Fallston Cougars nailed down their 13th state field hockey title Saturday evening, beating the Pocomoke Warriors, 4-2, in the Class 1A state championship game on the Washington College campus..

Fallston was leading, 4-0, with just under eight minutes left when the Warriors cut their deficit to 4-2 with a pair of goals in a two-minute span. After the second Pocomoke tally, Megan Grant, Fallston's third year head coach, who led the Cougars to their 12th championship in 2009, called a timeout.

"I just told everyone to relax," Grant said. "I told them to calm down, take control of the game, and we would be okay. Coming into this game, I knew Pocomoke was good, and they would test us. They definitely had a surge there in the last 10 minutes. They are a really strong, skilled team."

The Cougars took Grant's advice, controlled the ball through the final five minutes, won the game and ended Pocomoke's run of eight consecutive state Class 1A championships.

After 11 minutes of scoreless play, Fallston broke the ice when Jenna Mosketti blasted a shot into the low left corner of the goal following a Cougar breakaway.

"It was really exciting to get that first one, to give us that momentum push," Mosketti said. "There was a rebound off someone's shot, I got it in front of the goal and had an open shot. It's awesome to win [a state title] again. I was a sophomore when we won it the last time, and this is a perfect way to end my high school career."

Ten minutes later, Fallston's Marisa Perfetti doubled the Cougar lead by knocking in a shot after a teammate bounced their cross off the goal post.

"Someone shot it in, or crossed it, and the ball went off the bar," Perfetti said. "It was a great feeling to get that goal."

With a little under five minutes left before the half, Danielle McDiarmid scored Fallston's third goal after taking a feed from Perfetti, giving the Cougars a 3-0 advantage that they would take into the break.

The Cougars' final tally came 14 minutes into the second half as Jordan Wagner put her team up, 4-0, scoring with an assist from Sami Carter.

Pocomoke's goals, which came at the 7:26 and 5:18 marks, were both scored by Shelby Woods.

"Pocomoke is a great, great team," Grant said. "They've won eight straight, and you know why. They are a great team, and this was a really good final."
