A state medical examiner ruled this week that a 76-year-old Darlington man died from injuries he sustained in an a motor vehicle accident inHarford County earlier this month.

Maryland State Police troopers who investigated the Sept. 6 accident had initially believed Edward Lee Chatham, who was a passenger in one the vehicles involved, did not have life-threatening injuries.

Mr. Chatham, of the 2200 block of School Road in Darlington, died Wednesday. A medical examiner notified state police that his death was caused by injuries sustained in the crash, a spokesperson for theBel Air Barrack said Thursday.

According to state police, around 12:24 p.m. Sept. 6, Lavina Chatham, 74, whose address is the same as Mr. Chatham, tried to make a left from Route 1 (Conowingo Road) onto White House Road, north ofBel Air.

As Chatham's 2005 Toyota Camry was poised to turn, a 2003 Toyota Highlander driven by 26-year-old Patrick S. Hanley Jr. ofBel Air hit the Camry from behind, according to state police.

Maryland online court records show Hanley, of the 3000 block of Lochary Road inBel Air, was issued a citation for failure to control speed while on a highway to avoid an accident.

Court records also show Hanley has prior traffic convictions for speeding.

Mr. Chatham's death was the 18th onHarford County highways this year.
