A contract for $1,375,333 to American Infrastructure, of Fallston, to repair and/or resurface 14 roads in various parts of the county was approved recently by the Harford County Board of Estimates.
American Infrastructure was one of five bidders on the project and came in with the lowest bid. The estimates board awarded the contract at its Dec. 1 meeting in Bel Air.
Roads that will either be repaired or resurfaced, 5.2 miles in all, include Ashton Way (Westover Lane to Tollgate Road), Box Hill South Parkway (Route 924 to Abingdon Road), Cross Lane (Timothy Drive to Sharilyn Drive), Sharilyn Drive (Timothy Drive to dead end) and Vernon Court (Timothy Drive to dead end) all in Abingdon, Fort Hoyle Road (Magnolia Road to Trimble Road) in Magnolia, Grist Court (Wildwood Road to dead end), Groveton Court (Mill Creek Road to dead end), Hillsboro Court (Wildwood Drive to cul de sac), Mill Creek Road (Wildwood Drive to dead end), Wild Orchid Drive (Wildwood Drive to dead end) and Wildwood Drive (Carrs Mill Road to dead end) and in Fallston, Shures Landing Road (Shuresville Road to parking lot) in Conowingo and Timothy Drive (Bush Road to cul de sac) in Churchville.
Daniel Guthrie, from the Department of Procurement, said over the phone following the meeting that "the contractor will work with the county inspectors and determine which order they'll be done." He added that American Infrastructure will have a pre-start meeting to determine at which date they begin.
Once the contractor has the notice to proceed, Guthrie said, they will have 45 days to complete the project. "They'll be done quickly," he added.
Inspectors will determine exactly how much work needs to be done on each portion of the road, which ranges from road resurfacing to new sewer grates in older neighborhoods or repairing potholes.
A contract in the amount of $14,060 was also awarded to Frank J. Goettner Construction Company, of Kingsville, under a Safe Routes to School grant by the Federal Highway Administration.
The contract amount will be added to the original contract of $87,840, according to a Nov. 16 memorandum, because of "site conditions encountered on Barksdale Road [in Joppatowne] resulting in a change to the location of the speed hump, which required additional work including new handicap ramps, sidewalk, removal of existing handicap ramp and removal of existing crosswalk."
The Division of Emergency Operations was granted funds not to exceed $569,515 to purchase 95 Motorola wireless mobile and portable radios, as well as their accessories for county public safety personnel.
Mitch Vocke, manager of emergency operations, said all radios won't be purchased at once, but they wanted the entire contract to be approved so they could proceed without having to go through the approval process multiple times for the same project.
"Next year we're hoping to have additional funding to keep this project going," he said. The new radios will be fore fire/EMS and law enforcement employees, and existing radios will be moved to the public service portion of the county government. The purchase is part of the CMARC Phase III project and will help meet a narrowbanding order due by January 2013.
In another contract award by the board of estimates, Maryland Industrial Trucks, Inc., of Linthicum, will receive $72,607 for the purchase of a six-cubic-yard refuse packer mounted on a 2012 Ford F550 Chassis for the Department of Parks and Recreation to remove garbage from parks facilities.
The truck will replace an existing 2003 Ford F550 trash truck, which has over 156,000 miles driven on it.
The county renewed a sublease agreement for one year with a five-month option to renew for a portion of a property at 2353 Rockspring Road in Forest Hill for $8,486.40 annually. The State of Maryland Pest Control currently uses the space.
