The Harford County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting incident that occurred near the Edgewood High and Middle School campus late Monday afternoon.
Shortly before 5 p.m., there was an emergency radio broadcast for a gunshot wound on Willoughby Beach Road in Edgewood.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the 2400 block of Willoughby Beach Road for what was called in as an accidental gunshot wound to the leg, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesperson for the Harford County Fire and Ambulance Association.
The 51-year-old man was transported by ambulance to Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Gardiner said.
When deputies arrived on scene they found a man sitting on a log in the front lawn of his residence, bleeding from his left leg, according to a police report of the incident from the Harford County Sheriff's Office. The deputy attempted to stop the bleeding by applying an agency-issued tourniquet.
The deputy could also smell alcohol on the man, who said he was cleaning his gun and accidentally fired it, according to the report. The man would not say where the firearm was, and another deputy found a black revolver in the living room on a dresser, with a small amount of blood on the trigger guard.
A deputy spoke with one of the home's owners, who said she heard what sounded like a rock hitting a window and when she looked outside, the man said he shot himself.
The man's name has not been released because he had not been charged, sheriff's office spokeswoman Monica Worrell wrote in an e-mail Tuesday. On the police report, the victim is listed as having discharged a firearm in violation of county code.
