As Peterson was returning to his seat, according to charging documents, two of the deputies saw a metal clip on his pants pocket, similar to that which is used for a folding knife. After the game was over, the deputies asked Peterson outside the gymnasium if he had a knife, according to charging documents.

Peterson admitted he had one in each front pocket and another in his right sock, according to charging documents, so the deputies arrested him. Peterson told police he did not realize he had the knives with him and carries them for use at a warehouse he works in, according to charging documents.
