Two 17-year-old girls, one from Edgewood and the other from Aberdeen, were arrested after fighting at a basketball game at Edgewood High School Friday night, the Harford County Sheriff's Office confirmed Monday.
According to school security camera footage, the girl from Edgewood approached the Aberdeen girl and punched her in the face.
The assault occurred at about 8:30 p.m. at the end of a boys varsity basketball game between the Aberdeen and Edgewood teams at Edgewood High, in the 2400 block of Willoughby Beach Road.
A sheriff's deputy, who was on duty at the game, pulled the Edgewood girl away from the fight and onto the basketball court. Both girls continued shouting at each other, as both the deputy and Principal Larissa Santos asked them to calm down, according to people who witnessed the altercation.
After the Edgewood girl was removed from the area, the other girl continued yelling and being aggressive, and was removed from the school as well.
The Edgewood girl was charged with second-degree assault and was later released to her mother's custody, while the other girl was charged with disorderly conduct, a sheriff's office spokesman said.
The girls are both students, one from Joppatowne High School and the other from Aberdeen High School.
"Appropriate disciplinary action" has been taken against the students by their respective schools, Harford County Public Schools Manager of Communications Teri Kranefeld wrote in an e-mail Tuesday.
