Hung jury in 2010 Edgewood shooting trial

An Edgewood man and suspected "high ranking" gang member went to trial last week in connection with a 2010 shooting near the Courts of Harford Square neighborhood, but he may be tried again after the jury could not agree on a verdict.

James Cooper Valentine, 21, with an address in the 1900 block of Edgewater Drive, was indicted last July on two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of attempted second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, two counts of use of a handgun in commission of a violent crime, wear carry and transport a handgun, possession of regulated firearm under age 21 and reckless endangerment.

Valentine's jury trial began July 18 and concluded July 22.

"The case went to the jury and the jury could not reach a decision," Harford County State's Attorney Joseph Cassilly said.

Cassilly said he could not discuss the details of the case because the trial did not result in a verdict.

"It's most likely that we're going to bring the case back and end up retrying it," Cassilly said.

On July 11, someone called 911 to report someone else had been shot on Yorkshire Drive.

Harford County sheriff's deputies pulled onto Yorkshire Drive a short time later and were flagged down by a person in an SUV, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

The driver, a relative of one of the two victims, was on the way to the hospital with the victims, who were in the back seat. Solothol Thomas Delilly, 18, and Rashad Colyns, 18, both of Edgewood, were both shot in the torso.

A house on Harford Square Drive A Court was hit by a stray bullet during the shooting.

Valentine and Keeyan Omar Brooks, also of Edgewood, were charged in connection with the crime.

While both men charged are suspected gang members, police said at the time that the shooting was not directly related to gang activity, but rather a personal matter.

At Valentine's initial bail hearing, a prosecutor said Brooks and Valentine were suspected gang members and identified Valentine as a "high ranking member."
