A Joppa man is being held without bail after allegedly shooting into a house where his estranged wife and son were.
Steven Mark Freeland, 38, of the 500 block of Philadelphia Road, was charged Sunday with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and vandalism more than $500. He was originally held on $150,000 bail, but after Monday's hearing, District Court Judge John Dunnigan ordered Freeland to be held without bail. He also granted a protective order for Jennifer Freeland, his wife, and their two children.
The incident occurred Sunday, according to charging documents, when a possibly intoxicated Freeland reportedly pulled up at 86 Haverhill Road in Joppa, where his wife, Jennifer Freeland, from whom he is separated, was eating with her 15-year-old son and boyfriend.
According to the report, Steven Freeland dropped his bike and allegedly went to the back deck of the residence with a handgun and shot through the glass door into the kitchen. No one was injured, but there is a hole in the refrigerator from the round.
An earlier call, also in the charging documents, reported that a "possible intoxicated" motorcycle driver, without a helmet, had gone off the road and the driver hit his head. The motorcycle, according to the report, matched the one Steven Freeland had at the Joppa address.
Jennifer Freeland was at the bail review and told Dunnigan she wanted a protective order against him and custody of their two children, their 15-year-old son and their 7-year-old daughter. She also reported that he had been stalking and harassing her for several months.
Immediately following the bail review, Dunnigan held a hearing for Jennifer Freeland's requests and granted her custody of the children, as well as a protective order against Steven Freeland for herself, her children, their schools and her daughter's day care provider.
Steven Freeland works at the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center in a position that requires security clearance, according to Public Defender Omar Simpson, who requested reasonable bail for Freeland. Assistant State's Attorney Elizabeth Bowen, however, called the charges "very serious," referring to the use of a handgun with a child present, and suggested no bond.
