Edgewood remains atop boys basketball power poll

I got back from a Florida vacation late Wednesday night with a sunburned nose and a depleted bank account, and hadn't checked my email since I left the previous Thursday. After going over the boys basketball reports, box scores and recaps that were sent during my absence, I whipped up my latest power poll. Here it is, taking into account all games played through Wednesday night:

1. Edgewood: On top for the second straight week after bumping off Aberdeen, the Rams had a close one against Fallston Jan. 12, edging the Cougars, 78-77, then topping Harford Tech, 66-51, on Tuesday. They are tied at 4-1 in the Chesapeake Division with Elkton, the only team that's beaten them. Looking ahead, Edgewood has C. Milton Wright tonight (Friday), then hosts Elkton on Tuesday in round two; the latter will be key in deciding who wins the upper division.

2. Aberdeen: The Eagles lost back-to-back games to tough, non-UCBAC sides, both of which are top-50 teams in statewide rankings, but neither result was a blowout, so we'll see if stacking the schedule pays off for the Aberdeen boys. Their next game with Edgewood, a road contest, takes place two weeks from today.

3. Patterson Mill: The UCBAC's last unbeaten team, Patterson Mill, beat the Chesapeake Division's CMW 73-57 on Tuesday night, which is why they moved up a spot on this list. The Huskies are playing like they belong in the upper division, which is probably where they're headed.

4. Joppatowne: Though playing in the Susquehanna (lower) Division, the Mariners scored a 17-point, 61-44 win over North Harford on Wednesday night, which came after a 61-33 drubbing of Perryville, and a narrow, 52-48 loss to undefeated Patterson Mill, so they're moving up a few spots.

5. North Harford: Once up in the top-three after a strong, 5-1 start to the season, the Hawks have gone 2-5 since then, with their most recent losses coming to bottom-ranked Havre de Grace and the lower-division's Joppatowne Mariners. If they can turn things around quickly, there's still a chance to make noise in the Chesapeake Division.

6. Harford Tech: Essentially tied with the team below them on this list, the Cobras have suffered a pair of losses in their two most recent games, dropping contests with Patterson Mill (60-44) and top-ranked Edgewood (66-51). Tonight they'll travel to play Perryville, then they have a road game on Tuesday with Bel Air.

7. C. Milton Wright: I was tempted to put the Mustangs up another spot after the result of their game last Friday, a 70-68 loss to the division-leading Elkton Golden Elks, but then they lost 73-57 to Patterson Mill on Tuesday.

8. Fallston: The Cougars gave Edgewood a serious run for its money Jan. 12, eventually losing by a single point, 78-77, to the number-one Rams, and that was two days after a 54-52 loss to Elkton. Those are some mighty close results against quality teams.

9. Bel Air: After having back-to-back games postponed because of a referee shortage and a power outage, the Bobcats rebounded from a long break with a 59-39 win over Rising Sun on Tuesday.

10. Havre de Grace: Could a five-point victory last Friday over North Harford be the start of an upsurge for the Warriors?
