Aberdeen Days Inn set to reopen after fire, manager says

Days Inn in Aberdeen should be reopen soon after the building was condemned last week following a small fire, the manager says.

Ken Patel, manager of the hotel on West Bel Air Avenue, said Wednesday he expects the site to be fully open once the fire inspection and building inspection are done.

"We are getting the main building up and running," he said, adding he is waiting for BGE to provide power.

Patel said the fire did not seem to make a significant impact on the property.

"It's just nothing but a loss of business," he said. "Nobody got hurt or anything."

The hotel was condemned by fire and building code officials after a fire in two unoccupied rooms on the morning of Feb. 1 caused about $40,000 in damage. The fire originated in a nightstand light cord, according to the State Fire Marshal's Office.

A routine investigation of the premises by fire investigators found what the fire marshal's office called "serious and multiple fire, building and electrical violations."

Deputy Chief Mark Bilger of the fire marshal's office said last week that inspectors identified 25 units in the hotel that "did not have working smoke alarms or did not have smoke alarms at all." These rooms were being occupied and did not meet the minimum requirement of the state fire prevention code, he added.

"Cooking was also going on in the rooms," Bilger said, another violation. The rooms are "not designed for that kind of operation," he said.

According to state tax records, the Aberdeen Days Inn was built in 1973 and is owned by Pooja LLC.
