Three Harford Community College employees have been named recipients of the 2013 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Awards.
Jan M. Brewer, assistant professor of sociology and social work; Deborah Jaeger, mathematics faculty; and Dr. Scott Schaeffer, assistant professor of biology, were named recipients of the 2013 NISOD Excellence Awards. NISOD is the outreach organization of the Community College Leadership Program at the University of Texas at Austin and supports the pursuit of excellence in teaching and leadership at more than 700 member colleges. Award recipients recently traveled to Austin, Texas, to attend the NISOD International Conference on Teaching and Learning and receive their NISOD medallions.
Brewer has been teaching at Harford Community College since 2000 and created the successful social work track within the sociology program; she also serves as its academic advisor. As a full-time instructor, Brewer teaches Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Social Work, Marriage and Family and Juvenile Delinquency. She also develops and teaches all sociology online courses sponsored by HCC. She earned a bachelor of liberal arts from University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) in social work, a master of social work from University of Maryland at Baltimore (UMAB) and has completed more than 20 hours of post-graduate certificate training specializing in Treating the Traumatized Adolescent from UMAB.
Jaeger received a bachelor of arts in mathematics and secondary education from Trenton State College, now The College of New Jersey, and earned a master of arts in mathematics and secondary education from the University of Maryland at College Park. While working on her master's degree, she taught mathematics to the elementary education majors and was part of the University of Maryland Mathematics Project. After leaving College Park, she taught high school mathematics in New Jersey and then in Alaska, where she worked with students from the Inuit Nation as well as native Eskimos. She has taught at Harford Community College for 20 years, working with both developmental classes and credit math courses. She has taken an active role in the mathematics portion of the Core Standards State Curriculum and the Statewide Mathematics Group, as well as working on mathematics curriculum at HCC.
Schaeffer joined the HCC faculty in 2007 and teaches human anatomy and physiology, the human body in health and disease and nutrition. Schaeffer earned a bachelor of science in health and physical education from West Chester University and a doctor of chiropractic from Palmer School of Chiropractic. He maintained a family chiropractic practice for 12 years, focusing primarily on pediatric and maternal wellness, and also has experience as a personal trainer and strength coach at various gyms. He served as an adjunct instructor at several colleges in Pennsylvania. His most recent publication is the A.D.A.M. Interactive Anatomy Online Student Lab Activity Guide. He was also the contributing writer to Applied Anatomy & Physiology: A Case Study Approach. Schaeffer has served as A.D.A.M.'s Primary Subject Matter Expert in the development of anatomy and health and wellness web-based educational products.
