Harford library director named one of Baltimore's Top 25 female CEOs

Harford County Public Library Director Mary Hastler was presented with a Brava! Award from Baltimore SmartCEO on July 10, recognizing her as one of the top 25 female CEOs in the Baltimore area.

Hastler was selected for the award for her leadership in expanding library system's public service role with the introduction of innovative literacy programs, exciting product expansions, record-breaking fundraising events and cutting-edge technology, according to a library system press release.

Two other women from Harford County operations also were honored with Brava! Awards: Judith R. Mason, of Harford Community Action Agency; and Patricia Bonney, of The Highlands School.

Among the new initiatives launched under Hastler's leadership is library system's new pre- and early-literacy STEM program, Little Leapers, which provides activities and materials that focus on fostering and developing essential school readiness skills through STEM topics while nurturing lifelong interest. Also under Hastler's leadership, the library system was recently selected as the first public library in Maryland to offer Hoopla, a service that allows customers to stream thousands of movies, television shows, music albums and audiobooks on a smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer.

SmartCEO's Brava! Awards program celebrates top female CEOs who combine their entrepreneurial spirit with a passion for giving back to the community.

"With each iteration of the Brava! program, I am constantly amazed by the passion and drive these leaders possess. These women are doing exceptional things not only for Baltimore's business community but also for the communities in which we all work and live. Their impact is felt far and wide, and we're excited to see how much more they can do as the years pass," Jaime Nespor, group publisher of SmartCEO, said in a press release. "We are honored to recognize such a group of women and their accomplishments."

The winners were celebrated in style at the Baltimore Brava! Awards ceremony at the American Visionary Arts Museum.
