Ron Browning resigned from the Harford County Public Schools Board of Education effective Monday, six months after he was appointed to the position.
Browning, who represents the Havre de Grace and was appointed to replace Don Osman who did not seek a second term after his first expired, sent his letter of resignation to the board, as well as Gov. Martin O'Malley's office, "a week or two ago," according to HCPS Manager of Communications Teri Kranefeld.
In his letter, Browning cites "time constraints of operating my own business, teaching classes, civic duties, family obligations and work part-time for other employers" as the reason for not being able to "fulfill the enhanced time expectations of the Board of Education of Harford County Public Schools."
Browning was appointed to the board by O'Malley July 8; he was sworn in July 11 and sat in on his first meeting later that night.
Browning is the proprietor of La Cle D'or Guesthouse in Havre de Grace. He writes a weekly column for The Record and when he was appointed in July was teaching Spanish at the Community Colleges of Baltimore County, where he is an adjunct professor, and geography at area nursing homes.
Kranefeld said she was not sure when another member would be appointed, as the governor makes those decisions. When that happens, however, she said that it wouldn't "occur quickly."
Pat Foerster, education policy advisor for the governor, said appointed board of education members serve four-year terms.
She didn't say how long it will take to name a replacement for Browning.
