The John Carroll Patriots eclipsed the 20-victory mark for the 12th time in team history, and the fifth time in the last six seasons, with a 60-52 win Friday over the visiting Mt. Carmel Panthers.
John Carroll's Mike Owona had a team-best 12 rebounds, scored eight points and blocked a pair of shots. Justin Jenifer had 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals in the victory, while teammate Rodney Elliott posted 14 points, two rebounds, on steal and a game-high six assists.
Marcus James helped out the winning cause with six points, three rebounds, one steal, one assist and one block, while Daryn Garner had four points. Lionel Owona had two points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal in the win.
Tech notches division win
The Harford Tech Cobras busted out of a 28-28 halftime tie Monday night in their Susquehanna (lower) Division matchup with the visiting North East Indians to earn a 66-59 victory.
Playing without center Isaiah Gills, who was sitting out with an injury, the Cobras were led by Danny Crawford, who put together a 23-point, 10-rebound performance.
Harford Tech's Telvonne Lambert just missed the triple-double, putting up 19 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, while teammate Derell Lee netted eight points in the victory. Zach Valenti had seven points and a team-high 12 rebounds for the Cobras.
Rams beaten twice at tourney
The Edgewood Rams ventured south to Baltimore on Friday and Saturday to take on opponents from Baltimore City and County in the annual Basketball Academy Tournament, and came up short in both their matchups.
The Rams were beaten in the second round of the tournament at Lake Clifton High on Saturday afternoon, losing 66-37 to the Edmonson-West Side squad.
Thomas Dillard led the Rams with an 11-point effort, while Maulvi Williams and Van Rolle both scored six points in the loss. Van Rolle pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, while teammate Fortune Okigweh led the Rams in blocks with six. Edgewood's Detrick Matthews posted three points and four rebounds in the loss, while fellow Ram Roderick Harrison had four points.
The Rams trailed 34-22 at the halftime break.
The loss was the second in two days for the Rams, who fell to Randallstown, 64-60, on Friday afternoon in the first round of the tournament.
In that game, Rolle led the Rams with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Williams posted 14 points, 10 rebounds and five steals in the loss.
Edgewood's Dillard came through with 14 points, 10 rebounds and two steals, while Harrison had nine points, four rebounds and three steals.
Huskies suffer first losses
Patterson Mill sustained its first losses of the season on Thursday and Saturday at the Basketball Academy Tournament in Baltimore.
The Huskies lost to Owings Mills, 55-40, on Saturday in the second round played at Lake Clifton High.
The Huskies trailed 26-24 at the halftime break.
J.J. Butler and Malik Bonds each scored 10 points to pace the Patterson Mill offense, while Garett Burkhead had eight points in the loss. Jay Kuhn netted six points for the Huskies.
Playing in the tournament's opening round on Thursday night, the Huskies suffered a tough 57-47 loss to the Digital Harbor squad.
The loss was the first of the season for Patterson Mill, which had won all 13 of its regular season and holiday tournament games until Thursday.
"It was an amazing game," Huskies' head coach Jeroud Clark said afterward. "It was back and forth the entire time. They made a little run in the third quarter and went up 10 points. We cut it down to three in the fourth quarter, but they went back up. We had another shot to get close with six minutes left, but we missed six straight free throws, and that's where the game was won."
Leading the way for the Huskies were Burkhead and Butler, who each netted a team-best 12 points. Butler also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Bobcats drop Tigers
The Bel Air Bobcats came out on top of their Friday-night Susquehanna (lower) Division showdown with Rising Sun, beating the visiting Tigers, 74-60.
Leading 46-35 heading into the fourth quarter, the Bobcats exploded for 28 points in the final eight minutes to seal up the victory, their second of the week.
Chris Murdock had 21 points and four assists for the Bobcats, while teammate Tyler Norcross netted 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Juwan Singletary contributed 10 points, six rebounds and three steals in the victory.
Aberdeen over CMW
In Friday's Chesapeake (upper) Division showdown between Aberdeen and host C. Milton Wright, the visiting Eagles came out on top, knocking off the Mustangs, 67-40.
Pacing the Eagles offense was Mike Davenport, who netted 17 points. Deandre Henson had 15 points for Aberdeen, and Brian Adkins added 12 points for the winners. Jevon Hill-Gee scored 11 points, and fellow Eagle Dezmon Smoaks had five points.
CMW's Mychal Stefanides had 11 points, and three steals, while teammate Will Hazelton put up 10 points and three assists. Matt Kline registered seven points and a team best four rebounds in the loss, while the Mustangs' Conner Bays had seven points. Kevin Dorsey had three steals for CMW.
Aberdeen was leading 27-16 at the halftime break.
Mariners beat Tech
The Joppatowne Mariners earned a big Susquehanna Division victory on Friday night, defeating the Harford Tech Cobras, 56-46.
Markell Huggins led the winning side with a 20-point performance, while Trevon Mosely had 13 points for the Mariners. Lavelle Banks and Kalil Gore scored six and nine points respectively, for Joppatowne. Mosley led the Mariners in rebounds with 15, while Banks pulled down 13 boards.
Harford Tech's Danny Crawford notched 18 points and six steals in the loss, while teammate Isaiah Gills had 15 points, 23 rebounds and six blocks. The Cobras' Telvonne Lambert dished out a team-high 11 assists.
Hawks come up short
The North Harford Hawks battled in their Friday road game with Elkton, but came up just short of the victory, losing 49-47 to the Golden Elks.
"We played our hearts out," North Harford coach Jeff Burrows said.
The Hawks were up 32-21 after two quarters of play.
Nick Tittle put up 13 points and 12 rebounds for North Harford, while Ryan Stinar had a team-best 14 points in the defeat. The Hawks' Brock Hurley had 10 points and six rebounds.
Fallston dispatches Havre de Grace
The Fallston Cougars picked up a road victory on Friday night, beating the Havre de Grace Warriors, 65-59, in overtime
Lavelle McCullers was Havre de Grace's big gun, posting 28 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
