The town of Bel Air is upgrading its computer systems and backup and buying a new police truck.
During their Tuesday work session, Town of Bel Air commissioners discussed several contracts expected to be approved at Monday's meeting and approved the purchase of a server and power vault.
The server purchase, according to Director of Administration Joyce Oliver, will amount to $14,678 for a 2008 Dell Microsoft Server and a vault, a unit for storage and backups for all users, by way of state procurement.
The town has funds carried over from last year, Town Administrator Chris Schlehr said, totaling $15,000 so this project comes below budget. It will also allow the town to rehabilitate the current server and use it as a backup in case the main server goes down.
Except for Robert Preston, who was absent, commissioners unanimously approved the purchase, allowing Oliver to start the process.
Commissioners also discussed a $20,355 contract to be awarded to Apple Ford for the early purchase of a four-by-four police vehicle with a cargo package. The funds, according to Schlehr, are in the fiscal year 2012 budget.
The town wants to purchase the police vehicle early to give the Public Works Deputy Director Stephen Kline a four-wheel-drive vehicle to use for town business.
Kline, Schlehr said, would not be taking the car home at all and it will stay at the department of public works. Public Works Director Randolph Robertson pointed out that Kline frequently comes in during inclement weather.
The vehicle Kline will receive is almost eight years old, Police Chief Leo Matrangola said, with less than 75,000 miles on it.
"I think it'd be a good fit for Steve," Schlehr added.
Finance Director Lisa Moody also briefed commissioners on a contract for the fiscal year 2012 tax-exempt vehicle and equipment financing. This year they sent letters to 12 banks and received four responses.
For a seven-year maturity the town received rates ranging from 1.88 percent to 4.25 percent, she said.
Bids were due Tuesday, and Moody said she will have a recommended bidder at Monday's meeting. The award is for $261,771 and two police vehicles, a dump truck and a trash truck, she added.
The third bid contract will be for a new patio at Rockfield Manor, funded jointly by the Greater Bel Air Community Foundation and Rockfield Foundation, which contributed $15,000 each.
The town does not have a recommended bidder yet, Schlehr said, but plans to have one by Monday's meeting.
Commissioners approved the parade routes for the Bel Air High School Bobcat Homecoming Parade on Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. as well as the Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Planning and Community Director Kevin Small gave another presentation on the possible adequate public facilities ordinance, this time with examples of possible development situations. Schlehr reiterated, again, the town doesn't "have a time schedule yet" to propose the legislation.
The next commissioners meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in town hall.
