Whiteford woman held on $100,000 in assault case

A Harford County judge left the bench in the midst of bail review hearings Monday afternoon after the young woman's mother admitted to giving her daughter medication not prescribed to her.

Krystal L. Wing, 29, of the 1500 block of Main Street in Whiteford, was charged Monday with first- and second-degree assault and disorderly conduct after an incident at a local bar late Sunday night.

At her bail review hearing in Harford County District Court, Assistant Public Defender Brian Cunningham said Wing has her GED and some college courses from Harford Community College and for a time was working as a medical assistant.

He said Wing has no license, but has actively been seeking employment within walking distance and has an upcoming interview with a pizza place near her home.

Cunningham added she has some health problems, including heart disease and bipolar disorder.

He said she has no violent convictions and argued the case and her background warrant a significant reduction from $50,000 bail.

Assistant State's Attorney Cameron Legg said Wing has several convictions, including theft, driving under the influence and driving while impaired. Legg deferred to the court on bail amount.

Wing's mother, Susan Wing, asked to say a few words on her daughter's behalf.

Susan Wing started talking about her daughter's health and explained the young woman has been without health insurance for about four months. Susan Wing said the lapse happened because she made the mistake of naming her daughter as a dependent on tax returns which led the younger woman to lose eligibility for insurance.

The mother went on to say she started sharing her own medications with her daughter. District Court Judge Mimi Cooper stopped Susan Wing in the middle of her statement and firmly told her that her actions constitute a crime that could land her in jail for 20 years and she should speak with a lawyer before saying anything else.

Cooper then left the bench for a brief recess, an unusual occurrence in the midst of bail hearings. The room was silent and tense immediately following the outburst. About 10 minutes later Cooper returned and set a bail of $100,000 in the case. Cooper also added conditions that Krystal Wing remain drug and alcohol free upon release and her bail be posted corporate surety.

Krystal Wing remained in custody at the Harford County Detention Center Tuesday.
