A fetus was found in a Dumpster Tuesday evening near Seasons at Bel Air apartments.
Police received a call around 6 p.m. Tuesday from someone reporting that a mother had placed a stillborn baby in a metal trash container in the 900 block of Sablewood Road in Bel Air, according to Bel Air Police, which is handling the investigation.
A woman, who identified herself as the mother, reported the birth of the baby to Baltimore County detectives and was escorted to the Bel Air address to point out the trash bin, according to a Bel Air Police Department news release issued Wednesday morning.
The woman was in Baltimore County when she reported the incident; once Baltimore County detectives escorted the woman to the scene, they notified the Harford County Sheriff's Office, Bel Air Police Chief Leo Matrangola said Wednesday.
Harford County detectives found the baby, he added.
The woman, whose name has not been released, told police she gave birth at a relative's home in the town of Bel Air and placed the baby in a plastic bag before putting it in the trash bin, according to the release.
The woman was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air for medical treatment and another interview, according to the release. She has since been released, Matrangola said.
The fetus was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine cause of death. Police do not know if charges will be filed until they hear back from the medical examiner, Matrangola said.
Matrangola could not release how far along the woman was in her pregnancy or where in town the baby was born.
