Havre de Grace wins Junior Baseball District 5 title

The Havre de Grace Little League Junior Division Baseball All-Stars won the Maryland District 5 Championship on Tuesday, beating North East, 1-0.

It was 32 years ago that a 13-year-old Havre de Grace Little League All-Star baseball team won a Maryland District 5 championship. Tuesday night the drought ended.

The Havre de Grace 13-14, or Junior Division, All-Stars captured the championship with a hard fought 1-0 win over North East. The game was played at Elkton Little League's Eder Park.

"It was incredible," Havre de Grace manager Chris Flosser said after the game. A game in which 13-year-old Christian Penrow threw a gem.

Penrow tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout, striking out eight. That lone hit came in the top of the fifth as North East loaded the bases. With two outs, a long drive to left-center field was chased down and caught by left fielder Chris Madera. Clearly a game-saver.

Havre de Grace scored the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth. Mikey Flosser bunted for a base hit and when North East threw late and errant to first base, the ball sailed up the rightfield line. Flosser was able to reach third base.

Robbie Keller followed with an RBI groundout to shortstop to push across the nearly magical run.

In the seventh, North East put the potential tie run on first, but a nifty 6-unassisted-3 double play ended the game and started a celebration.

"This is way better than anything that I've ever done," manager Flosser said. "Just watching those kids run around the field with that banner, it's unbelievable."

Despite the lack of scoring, Havre de Grace did have multiple hits. Connor Gorham, Justin Gutierrez, Josh Casazza and Penrow each had two hits.

"When we [Havre de Grace Little League] were winning the softball championships, I didn't think it could get any better than that," Flosser said.

Havre de Grace will compete for a state title starting July 19 in Denton. Havre de Grace will begin play at 1 p.m. versus the District 1 champion. Win or lose, Havre de Grace will also play July 20.

Havre de Grace made its way into Tuesday night's final with a 7-3 win over Rising Sun on Sunday. The game was a continuation of a game halted by bad weather on July 3 with the score tied at 3 in the bottom of the sixth.

Rising Sun had two runners on with two outs when play was suspended. With play resumed, pitcher Flosser threw one pitch and got a 4-3 groundout to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Havre de Grace plated four runs. Matt Mussman scored on a wild pitch and RJ Strong belted a three-run double.

Flosser issued a walk to start the bottom of the seventh, but then retired the next three hitters in order.
