Forty firefighters from the Abingdon, Joppa-Magnolia and Bel Air volunteer fire companies and the Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department responded to the scene and brought the fire under control in about an hour, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

One firefighter was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association spokesman Dave Williams said Saturday morning. Another firefighter was evaluated on scene.

Both firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries, Rich Gardiner, another association spokesman, also said Saturday.

The one injured firefighter had a head injury from a hose line, according to the notice of investigation issued by the fire marshal's office Monday, and the second firefighter had abdominal pains.

The firefighters were both transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air.

Photographs from the scene showed the rear of the home and its contents appeared to suffer extensive fire, smoke and water damage; however, it did not appear that the fire spread to adjoining dwellings in the row.

The structural loss is estimated around $50,000, according to the fire marshal's office, and content damage is estimated at $20,000.

It was an accidental fire, according to the fire marshal, caused by "improperly discarded smoking materials."
