Football: Fallston stays undefeated; HdG wins homecoming

The Fallston Cougars took their undefeated football season on the road Friday night to C. Milton Wright and came home with a 35-11 win.

Fallston is the only Harford football team without a loss. Perryville was also undefeated heading into play Friday night.

With the win, Fallston jumped to 6-0 on the year, while the Mustangs fell to 2-4.

Fallston began its scoring in the opening quarter, when quarterback John Hetterman hit receiver Chris Rose with an 80-yard touchdown pass.

Hetterman struck again later in the half, tossing a 27-yard scoring pass to Connor Davis.

Before the half-time whistle, the Cougars built their lead up to 21-0, with Marc Badger scoring on a six-yard run.

In the dying seconds of the second quarter, Mustangs placekicker Brendan Magistro put a 27-yard attempt through the uprights with distance to spare, making the score 21-3 heading into the locker room at the half.

On Fallston's first possession of the third quarter, Badger snapped off a 60-yard run that brought Fallston to the CMW six yard line, then scored his second touchdown of the game four plays later on a two-yard rush.

Fallston scored its final touchdown on its next possession. Ryan Umpleby ended a five-play, 38-yard drive with a nine-yard scoring run to put the Cougars up 35-3.

The Mustangs got their lone touchdown of the contest late in the fourth quarter on a running play by freshman Will Hazleton. CMW converted the two-point attempt, making the score 35-11, where it stayed through the final whistle.

Fallston's John Eichelberger hit all five of his extra-point kicks.

HdG homecoming win

The Havre de Grace Warriors (4-2) treated themselves and many fans to a homecoming victory Friday night with a come-from-behind 28-26 win over Joppatowne in a UCBAC Chesapeake Division contest.

The Mariners, who began the year with three straight wins, suffered their third straight loss, but it didn't look that way to start.

Joppatowne (3-3) marched 67 yards to the end zone on its first drive and 75 yards on the second for a 12-0 lead.

Jamil Lee did most of the damage on the drives and scored the first two of four touchdowns. Lee capped the first drive with a 6-yard run and then scored from a yard out on the second drive.

Early in the second quarter, with a spread look out of the shotgun, Havre de Grace finally started to find some offense.

A direct snap to wideout James Smith resulted in a 29-yard run to the Joppatowne 38. Quarterback Lavell McCullers followed with a 16-yard run and four plays later plunged into the end zone from a yard out. A botched extra-point attempt left the Warriors behind by six, 12-6.

Joppatowne answered right back, moving 60 yards back into the end zone and Lee scoring from two yards out. The Warriors stopped the two-point try for the third time.

With just over two minutes to play in the half, Havre de Grace took over at its own 40 and in three plays, found the end zone.

A 17-yard pass from McCullers to Chris Askew set up a 43-yard scoring strike from McCullers to Smith. McCullers then tossed a two-point pass to Terrell Boothe, making it 18-14 Joppatowne at the half.

The Warriors took their first lead coming out of the half. McCullers and Smith hooked up on back-to-back passes, the latter a 33-yard touchdown. The conversion failed, but Havre de Grace led 20-18.

Joppatowne, however, came back again, this time moving 65 yards and Lee scoring from two yards out. Kashawn Graham ran for the two-point conversion to push the Mariners lead to 26-20 with 4:32 to play in the third quarter.

Like Joppatowne, Havre de Grace had another answer and it was the McCullers-Smith combo that tied the game. The final connection covered 21 yards and the biggest points of the game came on the conversion when McCullers found Cameron Doe with a pass despite a lot of pressure.

Neither team could manage enough offense over the final quarter to produce more points and the game ended with an Askew interception, the lone turnover of the game.

McCullers finished with 11 completions on 17 attempts for 204 yards and three touchdowns. Smith had five catches for 129 yards and three touchdowns.

Lee finished with 137 yards and four scores on 30 carries.

Hawks tackle Bobcats

North Harford improved to 5-1 with a 34-19 Chesapeake win over visiting Bel Air, which slipped to 2-4.

The Bobcats scored first in the opening quarter on Jay Delgado's three-yard run, but North Harford scored twice in the first and never trailed again.

Nic Hammer ran eight yards for the first Hawks touchdown and Josh Welsh ran nine yards to give North Harford the lead. Chris King made one of two extra-point kicks to put the Hawks ahead 13-7 after one quarter.

The Hawks went to the air in the second quarter to add to their lead. Brady Maguire caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Stinar, but a try for two points on the conversion failed.

Trailing 19-7, Bel Air kept the game close when Alex Love reeled off a 83-yard touchdown run. The kick failed, sending the game to the half with North Harford leading 19-13.

Stinar used his legs to score the game's lone third quarter points on a 30-yard run. Stinar then passed for two points to fullback Jake Hughes on the conversion, pushing the score to 27-13.

North Harford's final points came on a Nick Tittle 21-yard run and King's conversion in the fourth quarter, giving the Hawks a 34-13 lead.

Bel Air scored its final points on Love's second touchdown run from a yard out.

Rams drop Tigers

Edgewood went on the road to improve to 2-4, beating host Rising Sun, 30-22, in a Susquehanna division game.

Levar Shannon had another big night for the Rams, rushing for 182 yards and three touchdowns.

Huskies win on the road

The Patterson Mill football squad improved to 5-1 on the season Friday night with a 19-0 victory over host-team Harford Tech.

The Huskies led 6-0 heading into the half-time break.

The loss put Harford Tech at 0-6 on the year.

Eagles lose tough one

Down 14-12 to the visiting McDonough football squad with 30 seconds remaining in their Thursday night matchup, Aberdeen Eagles scored what looked like the game-winning touchdown.

Quarterback Kenny Faulcon tossed a 20-yard pass into the end zone, where the ball was tipped and caught by an Aberdeen receiver. The play was nullified, however, by an offensive pass interference call. Aberdeen tried for the score again, but Faulcon's final pass was intercepted, and the game ended.

"I think we could have beat them," Aberdeen coach Johnny Brooks said. "They played really tough, but we were right there with them. We had another touchdown called back on a block in the back penalty, so we could have won that thing."

The Eagles' final possession started with two minutes left on the clock, after they halted a 98-yard McDonough drive on their own goal line, then proceeded to the opposing 20 yard line, where Faulcon tossed the touchdown pass that was called back.

Aberdeen's touchdowns came on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Brenton Barnes, and 15-yard scoring run by Austin Bonsall.

Christian Carpenter had five catches for 70 yards, while Chavez Cheatham racked up a team-best 130 yards on six receptions.
